The Honourable Dr. Akash Paul joined
Caparo in
June 1981.
He attended Harrow School, London, have
BSc
Chemical Engineering & Economics from
Carnegie
Mellon University (Double Major with
Minor in
Biomedical Engineering and
Specialization in
Applied Reaction Kinetics) and MBA (with
specialization in Corporate Finance &
Marketing)
from MIT Sloan at the Massachusetts
Institute of
Technology, USA and cross-registered at
Harvard
Business School for Case Study Courses,
particularly in Family Businesses.
In 1976, he started on the shop floor
and in the
sales departments of Natural Gas Tubes
Ltd,
Tredegar gaining valuable insight into
the
production, sales and management of the
steel
tube manufacturing businesses. From 1981
to
1991, he also worked in his Apeejay
India Family
business at The Park Hotel, Flury’s &
Magnolia
Restaurants, Apeejay Shipping, Assam
Frontier &
Apeejay Tea, Kolkata and Martin & Harris
and
Walter Bushnell Pharmaceuticals, Mumbai.
In 1983, he was appointed as a director
of
Caparo Group and held Chairmanship of
Caparo
Merchant Bar, Caparo Steel & Tube
Products,
Armstrong Fastenings & Helicoil, Forest
Fasteners, Barton Conduits & Fittings,
Barton
Aluminium, Caparo Nupac PVC and
directorships in
all other subsidiaries.
In 1992, he was appointed as Chief
Executive
Officer of Caparo Group. During this
time, he
furthered Caparo's growth strategy in
UK,
Europe, USA and India, as well as
expanding
capacity and increasing profitability of
the
companies in the United Kingdom and was
President, Caparo Automotive Espana
(CREMSA and
ENSA), Spain and Executive Board, Caparo
Bull
Moose Tube, USA and Chairman, Caparo
Steel
Company, Pennsylvania, USA.
He has been an Independent Director of
Tech
Mahindra and a former-member of the
Dean's
Advisory Board at the MIT Sloan School
of
Management and the College of
Engineering Dean's
Advisory Council at Carnegie Mellon
University.
His Professional Memberships were of
AIChE-USA,
BIPSA UK Steel Association and first
Indian Head
of the Eurofer Merchant Bar Steel
Committee.
His hobbies are Dictionary Diving and
Thesaurus
Trawling. Interests are Linguistics,
Literature,
Feng Shui, Vedanta and Universalism. His
likes
are reading multi-religious doctrines
like
Bhagavad Gita, The Holy Bible, Quran
etc., Latin
Music and Dancing. He is fluent in
