RT Honorable Lord Swraj Paul of Marylebone, PC - an Indian born, British businessman and Philanthropist is the Chairman of Caparo Group Limited.

Lord Paul was born in Jalandhar (India) on the 18th February 1931, completed his high school education at Labbu Ram Doaba School, Jalandhar and Bachelors in Science from Punjab University (Forman Christian College, Lahore and Doaba College, Jalandhar) in 1949. Thereafter, he went to the USA to pursue his Bachelors & Masters degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA.

After completing his education, he joined his family business in Calcutta. Subsequently, in 1966 he went to England for medical aid for his younger daughter, Ambika. Following Ambika’s tragic death in 1968, he founded the Caparo Group in the United Kingdom. The first Caparo company was Natural Gas Tubes Ltd, a Steel Tubes Manufacturing Plant in Huntingdon, UK. The Caparo Group with headquarters in London, UK: has operations in the UK, USA, Canada, India and UAE.

Lord Paul has been conferred with the prestigious civilian award Padma Bhushan by the Government of India in 1983. In 1996, He was appointed as a Life Peer by Conservative Prime Minister John Major, and he sits in the House of Lords as a Cross-Bencher with the title Baron Paul of Marylebone, in the City of Westminster. In December 2008, he was appointed as the Deputy Speaker of the House of Lords. He was sworn as a Privy Councilor in October 2009.

Lord Paul has been actively involved in public service. He served as a Board Member for a group formed to bid for the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, London (2003-2012). He was appointed by the British Govt. as the Ambassador for British Business (1998-2010); Board Member of London Development Agency, the executive body of the Greater London Authority responsible for London’s Economic Development and Regeneration (2000-2008); Chairman of Olympics Delivery Committee responsible for delivering the land & infrastructure for London 2012 Olympic Games (2005-2008).

Lord Paul served as the Chancellor of University of Westminster (2006-2014); Governor (1992-97), Pro-Chancellor (1997-2000) and Chancellor (2000-01) of University of West London; and is currently serving as the Chancellor of University of Wolverhampton (1998 onwards).

Lord Paul founded the Indo-British Association in 1975 to promote better understanding between India and Britain and served as its Chairman (1975 to 2000).

Lord Paul is the Chairman of the Ambika Paul Foundation, a Charitable Trust in the memory of his daughter; and he has helped build the Ambika Paul Memorial Gardens & Ambika Paul Children’s Zoo at the London Zoo. He has established the Ambika Paul Infant Lab Suite at Carnegie Mellon University, USA; the Ambika P3 event & exhibition space at the University of Westminster, UK; Ambika Paul Mezzanine & Study Space at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA; Ambika Paul Building & Ambika Paul Students Union Centre at the University of Wolverhampton, UK
